Staying in Aarhus & Denmark

Whether planning your first trip to Denmark or visiting Aarhus from the other side of the country it can be helpful with a few recommendations for accommodation, dinner, drinks or where to find room for a pick-up game of cards with your (new) friends.

When in Denmark...

You don't actually have to do as the Danes, but here are a few survival tips for planning and making your your visit easier.

Language

Danish is the official language of Denmark, but most Danes speak English fluently with little difficulty and are happy to do so.

German, French, and Spanish are also taught in schools, so you may come across people who can speak or at least understand one of these languages. However, if you haven’t learned Danish by 2025, English is your safest option for communication.

Paying in Denmark

Cards, not cash. Denmark is not using the Euro. However, we recommend that you bring international debit/credit cards, rather than exchange your local currency, including Euros to Danish Kroner. VISA and Mastercard are preferred, but AMEX is also occasionally accepted.

More places accept card payments than cash and some places don’t accept cash at all. Euros and US Dollars are rarely accepted, except by shops specialising in tourism and then at an unfavourable rate.

Contactless payments, including Apple Pay and Google Pay is common.

Tipping

In Denmark, tipping isn’t expected or common, as service charges are usually included. However, if you receive exceptional service, it’s common to round up or leave 5-10%. Most places accept both cash and card, but contactless payments are highly encouraged.

Weather

Late October in Aarhus can be chilly, with temperatures around 8-12°C (46-54°F). Expect some rain, so pack layers, a waterproof jacket, and an umbrella.

Alcohol

Alcohol consumption is allowed for people over 18 in general and for all attendees over 18. Please be mindful that public drinking in Aarhus is acceptable but discouraged in certain areas.

However, be aware that drunken behaviour will not be tolerated at EC 2025 and during Week of Nightmares events.

We expect all participants to maintain sportsmanlike conduct at all times and to show respect for their fellow competitors and the event. Disruptive behaviour may result in removal from the tournament.

Food and drinks

Aarhus offers a large range of good places to eat and drink and if you feel like exploring on your own, Google Maps and reviews are a great place to start when looking for restaurants in Aarhus.

However, to make your life easier and to increase the odds of meeting other VTES players we have included a list of recommendations below both budget-friendly and for the foodie.

Breakfast

Eating out for breakfast is not as common in Denmark as in many other parts of the world, including the US and our southern neighbors, but some recommendable options do exist.
